Game of Thrones season 8: The Marya Seaworth mystery
Marya is the wife of Davos Seaworth, and while he has become an increasingly prominent character on the show over time we’ve still yet to meet his wife. She’s been referenced and we’re sure that some of the tragedy in her life has been hard for her to swallow, but we’ve never met her. She’s off somewhere probably worried about her husband every second of the day while he puts his life on the line. There’s something relatable about her struggle even though we’ve never met her, and a big part of that probably stems from the fact that Davos is really the show’s ultimate Everyman. He is the guy who doesn’t come into this world with any major physical or intellectual attributes. He’s just a guy trying to ebb and flow his way through survival. We almost consider him the anti-Littlefinger, and it’s poetic that in the final season he is still alive while Petyr Baelish is now dead, a casualty of a plot that he tried to execute against Arya Stark.
Are we getting a chance to meet Marya once and for all in the final season, to complete the picture for Davos? We’d love that, given that we could see him returning home to her and informing her how much their lives have changed. After all, if Davos survives you have to think he’d be granted some sort of better title and land as a reward for all of his efforts trying to make Westeros a better place. Unfortunately, we don’t think that this is going to happen — mostly because it doesn’t seem as though Liam Cunningham thinks that it’s going to happen, either. Speaking on this subject to TV Guide, the actor behind the Davos character made some of his thoughts clear on the missing Marya:
“I don’t think it’s going to happen … We’ve got six episodes left and we’re ramping up to World War III in Westeros. The introduction of my fabulously beautiful wife, I’d imagine, is not going to be seen.”
Who knows? Maybe Marya has been off this whole time training with the House of Black and White and is now some sort of hyper-fiecer warrior. After all, you can’t spell Marya without “Arya” thrown in there!
