Arrow season 6 trailer offers up Michael Emerson, Vigilante, and Deathstroke
If you look below, you can see some of the best footage that we’ve seen to date of some of the show’s new and returning villains. At the center of that is Slade Wilson/Deathstroke, and you have to wonder with him if he’s going to stay on the straight and narrow or decide to betray Oliver Queen in the end. We know that he has a history of swinging on that pendulum, and if there is something that serves as a trigger for him it could spell significant trouble for Oliver and the rest of the team. (In the past, said trigger was Shado, the woman he loved even though she did not quite love him back the same way.)
Beyond just Deathstroke, this trailer also gives you one of the first teases that we’ve seen to date of Michael Emerson and his new character — an unnamed villain who may very well be Helix head Cayden James. He is not a man we saw on the show last season, but we know him to be a significant threat to anyone who crosses his path. He’s a different sort of villain in that his mind is a weapon — he knows how to cause trouble without blinking an eye and how to ruin lives.
Then, there is of course the return of Vigilante (we are going to see him unmasked at some point) coupled with the series-regular status of Black Siren. This is more of a villain-by-committee approach this year, but it makes sense to do something different rather than trying to just follow up on Adrian Chase/Prometheus from last season. That storyline was epic and exciting, but at the same time in order to be truly great Arrow needs to routinely change the game.
Here’s where things get tricky
Does it benefit the show to present just a small piece of the puzzle in these trailers? It’s likely that some of the characters involved in the cliffhanger explosion survived and these trailers aren’t including them. We find ourselves of multiple minds about all of this given that these trailers are surprisingly effective without even seeing many of the other regulars; yet, we also do still love some of those supporting characters and want them to be alive. Our hope is that the show finds a way to include them without also at the same time making it feel as though there are too many super-powered cooks in the kitchen.
