If you love the Sonny Carisi character, Law & Order: SVU season 19 episode 5 (airing on October 25) is an episode that should be must-watch TV. He is going to have a key storyline in the hour (fittingly titled “Complicated”), but unfortunately for him is not going to be for the best reason.

You now how Carisi has a tendency to like to speak his mind? In many contexts this is one of the things that we like about him and find most admirable. It’s therefore rather unfortunate that in some other contexts it can land him in hot water. The SVU season 19 episode 5 synopsis gives you a little bit more insight on this very thing:

“A ten-year-old kidnapping case is reopened when a young woman is found wandering Central Park alone. Meanwhile, Carisi’s (Peter Scanavino) conversation with a newspaper reporter puts him in hot water. Also starring Mariska Hargitay (Lt. Olivia Benson), Ice T (Det. Odafin Tutuola), Kelli Giddish (Det. Amanda Rollins) and Raul Esparza (ADA Rafael Barba). Guest starring Brooke Shields, Peter Hermann, Ili Ray, Mike Faist , Jane Houdyshell and Isaiah Thomas.”

First things first, it’s interesting that SVU chooses to go in here and drop in Isaiah Thomas’ name like it’s no big deal at all. We’re talking here about a major point guard in the NBA! He recently filmed this appearance, and it seems to have been a life goal given that this is one of his favorite shows.

As for the other guest stars, this is proof that Peter Hermann and Brooke Shields are going to be sticking around for more than one episode — that’s great for the show having more of a long-term arc, though it’s possible that this may not be good for Benson if their stories are tied to her.

Let’s get back to Carisi now

What did Carisi say? It was probably something reckless and in the heat of the moment, but in this world he has to know that anything that he says can be turned against him. The media is not necessarily out to ruin the lives of detectives, but if you give them a little bit of ammo things can take a turn for the worse in a very short period of time.

If you do love the Carisi character or Peter Scanavino as an actor (we certainly do at CarterMatt), you can at least be excited about what this episode is giving you since it’s a battle to protect his public reputation. It’s a little different than just trying to deal with a mistake on a case.
