Vikings season 5 premiere date (why so late?), trailer arrive
Maybe you can save some of your leftover turkey (at least in America) for Wednesday, November 29, given that this is when the new season of the show will premiere. In one way, we will concede that it makes some sense — the ratings for season 4B were very strong when it aired over the holidays, and with Christmas / New Year’s falling on very different days of the week, the show doesn’t have to worry about taking any hiatuses. There is also not much in the way of competition at that time, not that Vikings really needed to worry about that all that much in the first place given that it’s one of the best shows on TV. It’s action-packed, well-acted, and all sorts of intense.
You get a small sense of the chaos that is coming in the new trailer for season 5 below, as we’re getting poised to see a war against brothers. The aftermath of Ragnar’s death only seems to be bringing even more calamity and destruction. Ivar’s got hold of the Great Heathen Army, Lagertha holds the title of Queen of Kattegat, and everyone holds a certain degree of apprehension for what the future holds. Given everything that she’s gone through at this point in the series’ run, Lagertha certainly holds a great deal of wisdom. It is probably with this in mind that she proclaims that we could be nearing the end of the world as we know it (start humming that song) at the tail end of the trailer.
Vikings obviously took a big risk removing Travis Fimmel from the equation, but they have another dose of star power coming courtesy of Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the series-regular role of warrior-priest Bishop Heahmund. We saw a tiny tease of him at the end of the season 4 finale, at least in comparison to everything else that is coming for him now. This trailer also gives you a sense of Bjorn’s journey in the Mediterranean, which is exciting mostly from the vantage point of exposing us to a very different landscape and sort of show than the one that is often brought to viewers with a cold, icy color palette.
To make up for the long hiatus, Vikings is going to be delivering a two-hour premiere; we envision History doing a split-season format once more, but with filming for the season already wrapped they don’t necessarily have to have a long hiatus if they don’t want one. This at least gives the cast some time to unwind after having been through a grueling process working on the show in Ireland and beyond.
One bit of good news following this Comic-Con trailer: There is no formal announcement that Vikings season 5 is the show’s last. Hopefully, that means there is more to come.
