Should American Horror Story season 7 feature crossover characters?
The reason that co-creator Ryan Murphy chooses to go in this direction is fairly simple: He does it so that he can expand his universe, create more hype around his series, and also to give some of his actors more in the way of meaty material. This was also pretty essential in the case of Sidibe back during Hotel, given that he couldn’t use her for any longer than a single episode thanks to her Empire gig, and he had to think of something creative in order to get her involved as much as possible.
So does he need to resort to this sort of stunt in order to get the upcoming season 7 of the anthology franchise a little bit more buzz? This is certainly a question up for debate, but there is no clear as to whether or not it will happen. If you’ve followed the American Horror Story franchise over the years, then you are probably more than well aware that Murphy tends to be secretive with some of what he puts on the show, and that is probably even more true as of late since Roanoke, when he shared almost nothing in advance.
Here, the reason that he doesn’t need to say a whole lot about this season in advance is simply because the upcoming season really does speak for itself. You’re taking on something so topical like the Presidential election, and there may be people who are watching the show for the first time who may never have seen some other installments of the show before. Therefore, you do run the risk of alienating your audience by bringing in references to past seasons.
Also, are you limited in terms of characters at this point?
That’s also something that the FX series has to think about, given that you only have people from Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Hotel, and Roanoke to really play with, and with those seasons, some of them are really limited. (Take, for example, Asylum and Lana Winters.) There aren’t too many characters from some of them who survived, and we’re also not entirely sure that anyone is really going to want to spend all that much time with anyone who was on Hotel at this point after that season went to hell in a handbasket.
If Murphy comes up with a super-creative cameo for the new season, we’re all for it. However, we’d much prefer at this point that he stick with the new story and some new characters rather than just existing faces.
What do you think: Should there be some further crossover characters on this American Horror Story season? Be sure to share in the comments!
