Arrow season 6 writers room officially opens! What should happen next?
The Arrow season 6 writers room is officially open, and for all those out there who love to track the trajectory of a show start to finish, this is great news. This means effectively that the team can start charting out what they want season 6 to look like, who they want some the villains to be, and how in the world they do want to resolve that insane cliffhanger from the end of season 5.
One thing that is known right now with certainty is this: The show’s done a great job of raising the stakes, and they just delivered the best season of the show since season 2. Prometheus was an excellent Big Bad, the new additions paid off, and the flashbacks were all tied together in a beautiful way with Oliver calling up his mother Moira and making it clear to her that he was coming home. (Susanna Thompson is a national treasure, no?)
Anyhow, the flashbacks were wrapped up so elegantly that the best thing the show can do is completely move past them now, at least as a regular plot device. If you do want to do something similar to “Specter of the Gun” where you have assorted flashbacks to a specific character like Wild Dog, that’s fine — just make them appropriate to the story being told and don’t rely on them anymore.
Beyond that, the show’s writers have a difficult task trying to appease one of the most divided followings out there. There are several characters on the show who people either love or don’t want around at all, and trying to make all of these different camps happy is an almost-impossible task. There’s also the struggle of how much to focus on romance versus the action and superhero drama. Our response to that is that romance is a part of life and should be there; yet, it shouldn’t ever supersede Oliver, Felicity, Diggle, and the rest of the team kicking butt and taking names. They did a good job of balancing that in season 5, so hopefully that continues.
At some point in the coming weeks, it’s possible more news about the villain will be coming, provided that there is a new villain to speak about. The show may rely instead on why they have with Katie Cassidy returning full-time as Black Siren and with Vigilante also still floating around out there.
