The X-Files season 11 renewal official; Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny back

The X-Files season 11 renewalThe truth is finally out there: The X-Files season 11 renewal is official.

In a statement from Fox today, the network confirmed that both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are going to be back for a ten-episode “limited series” (that’s what it is being called) run. This will premiere at some point during the 2017-18 season.

Here is what Fox Broadcasting Company head David Madden had to say on the renewal, and the work of creator Chris Carter:

“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators — these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide … Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.”

The new season will start filming a little bit later this summer, and we have a feeling that it could come back on Monday nights during a hiatus for Gotham — similar to what it did the last time it was on the air back in early 2016. This is four episodes longer than season 10, which is precisely what Duchovny in particular seemed to want. There wasn’t an interest in going back and doing another 22 episodes, but the ratings were certainly good enough to justify more than six. Plus, this probably means more creative standalones! To us, these episodes were the best part of season 10.

Sure, we already know that we want a season 12, and for the show to work like Sherlock where we get another season every couple of years. Still, let’s just celebrate the fact that we have this now, since at one point we weren’t sure we were ever going to get it.
