Broadchurch series finale: Chris Chibnall on saying farewell
Given that he put so much time and effort into making this series what it is, it makes some sense that Chibnall would be feeling a little emotional upon sending it off. This is reflected in what he had to say recently on the subject to BBC Radio:
“It’s a strange feeling actually, it’s quite emotional. It’s been an extraordinary journey with the show and [its success] has taken us all by surprise.”
This is the thing about creating such a landmark show — if you weren’t getting a little bit emotional over the end of it, there’s a good chance that something would be wrong. You want to feel something at the end of the road, something that makes you think that the entire journey that you’ve been on is ultimately worth the long hours. Even if Chibnall is ready to say goodbye to the property, there may be a few moments where he still struggles with it. After all, he’s only human, even if he is one of the strongest and most-prolific showrunners currently working in the business.
We’ve already shared that tonight is for certain the finale for the show, as there are no plans to continue the property beyond what we see tonight. There will always be a part of us that feels like there could be a chance to have more someday, but it’s hard to read into the future. For now, it’s better to just enjoy the story in the present … though we’re also not sure that “enjoy” is the right word to describe anything that you see within the world of this show. It’s more emotional and gut-wrenching.
