Big Brother Canada 5: Ika Wong pre-game interview (exclusive)

Think back to Big Brother Canada season 2. Ika Wong was tremendous entertainment every second that she appeared on the screen. She tore up letters, got into arguments, and she played hard almost every second. It didn’t stop her from being an early casualty — in some ways, it probably made it even more difficult for her to advance — but you can argue that her comments and actions got her another chance to return.

In this Ika Wong pre-game interview for Big Brother season 5, we will assess if she knows how to correct some of her past mistakes. There are some returning players this time who we’re not altogether excited to see play the show again. Then, there’s Ika, who we love.

CarterMatt – What made you want to come back and do Big Brother Canada again?

Ika Wong – Well, everyone wants a second chance, right? RIGHT?

What was the biggest thing you learned about yourself from the first time you played?

I learned that I need to adapt to my environment a little bit better. My facial expressions [give me away] a lot, and I can’t just go in, do my own thing, and not care about anyone else, like their dogs or their families. I have to pretend like I care (laughs).

How are you going to change your strategy from the first time?

I think now going in I’m not going to have a definite strategy. I think when you go in with that it prevents you from adapting week to week. That can hurt you in the house. I’m thinking I need to just go in and take a week, and try to adjust as the weeks go by.

Even though people saw your game the first time, do you think you’ll still be able to surprise people in any way?

I do! I left really early last time, and I think people didn’t get a chance to see my game. They saw my personality, but they didn’t see my game, which could probably help me moving forward.

What do you think your biggest weakness could be this time?

It’s the perception of me. It could make me a target. I think people who’ve watched the show before may judge me, and that may not work in my favor.

Is there anything that you’re nervous about entering the house?

The whole thing! I’m nervous about being a big target, I’m nervous about going home. I’m nervous if I’m the only [returning player] — are there more like me? (Laughs.) If there are more like me, have I told them off in the past? There are a number of things rolling through in my head.

Other than winning the money, what’s the one thing you’re hoping to get out of your second experience?

I’m hoping to show people that I can play this game. I think people see me as someone who was great entertainment, but not someone who was great at the game. I want them to see that I can be both entertainment and a great player.

Our snap judgment

Ika may not have the social game based on preconceived notions to win, but we do think that she is set up very well in terms of the makeup of the season. She’s not a super-threatening returning player, she’s entertaining enough that people will want her in the house, and we think she could be a competition threat after the jury phase. She’s one of the people we’re the most confident in when it comes to improving from their original performance.
