‘Switched at Birth’ season 5, episode 2 preview: Daphne, Mingo deal with the aftermath
Tonight, “Switched at Birth” aired its season 5 premiere, and in the process wasted little to no time reminding us that this is a show that has no problem with being edgy and pushing the envelope. It takes on controversial topics, and allows us to explore the emotional ramifications of them.
Going into next week’s new episode, we are going to get a chance to see how Daphne and Mingo handle a crisis that came out of nowhere for them, as Mingo’s choice of costume for a party led to him being accused of racial appropriation. While we don’t think that Mingo is a terrible human being, he obviously made an ignorant mistake in not thinking how something like this could impact people of different backgrounds. It was narrow-minded, and he’s got to pay the consequences for that and find a way to make amends.
Synopsis – “After a photo of Daphne and Mingo dressed up as their favorite singers at a college costume party goes viral, the pair find themselves caught up in a controversy that escalates into a discussion of race relations and free speech. Bay seeks a job at the tattoo parlor in town. Kathryn and John court a new shortstop for the UMKC baseball team, while Regina and Luca work on a class project together.”
Granted, we still have to see if Mingo is even remorseful or not. In the moment when he was at the party, he did not seem to understand that what he was doing was offensive in the slightest. Therefore, it’s certainly possible that all of this goes completely over his head.
Meanwhile, we also hope that this episode gives us something more on the Bay relationship front after her decision to live with Daphne made Travis concerned that Emmett had gotten into her head somehow.
