‘The X Factor’ UK: How Matt Terry defeated Saara Aalto

Matt Terry -

At this point, the results of “The X Factor” final are starting to settle in, and it is becoming all the more clear that Matt Terry is your champion! He defeated Saara Aalto in what was a pretty close showdown for most of the season, but there was a bit of a gap in the final vote.

Ultimately, the final data showed Matt beating Saara by a good 8% of the vote, even though she had led him in the previous three shows. So what happened there? There are a few key estimations that we can make.

First and foremost, you have to look at the idea of 5 After Midnight votes going more over to him — something that we theorized before the show. Saara’s a wonderful performer, but internet reaction suggests that she is a little more polarizing. Matt is more of a secure option for some viewers out there to select, given that he’s mainstream, familiar, and very talented. 5 After Midnight only lost to Matt by 2% of the vote in the Saturday show, so that gives you an indication of just how many votes that they had to potentially control things.

Second, we’d argue that Matt really raised his game over the final two shows, and that he may have won over some people who were somewhat on the fence. His second song in particular was particularly nostalgic, and one that was fairly prevalent across Great Britain thanks to some advertisements at the time. We’re not sure if Saara’s version of “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” captured much of the same feeling.

We’re not sure how many more factors there were that went into this, but we do feel like in the end, both parties should end up being just fine in the music industry. They’re going to have a lot of opportunities, so for them the future will largely be dictated by precisely how much work they put in and how willing they are to take chances and be bold.
