‘The X Factor’ UK final: Was Saara Aalto or Matt Terry the season 13 winner?
Tonight, “The X Factor” spent a ton of time before getting to the winner of the season, but they did just that at around the 9:54 mark during the telecast. We had two contenders in Matt Terry and Saara Aalto, and for most of the night, we had utterly no idea who was going to emerge as the champion. It’s been close all season, but it was especially close for much of the past couple of days.
For most of the night, we will be the first to tell you that we had more confidence in a Matt win than we did a Saara one, mostly because we felt it more likely that fans of 5 After Midnight were going to drift over to him than they would to her. Also, we do think he had a really good final two days in the competition, which boosted his stock dramatically after being a little weaker during the top four show.
Now that we’ve said that, a Saara win would be more than welcome, especially when you consider the larger narrative here of how big of an underdog she was during the early rounds. It’s hard not to want to root for the underdog!
In the end, the winner was … Matt! He pulled off the victory over Saara, and massive congratulations must go to him for doing that.
We’ll have to wait for a little while in order to see the total margin of victory for Matt, but it ultimately doesn’t matter as he becomes the second solo singer named Matt to win the show after Matt Cardle, and the challenge for him now is finding a way to stay relevant in a crowded industry that doesn’t often embrace solo male singers in the way that it used to. At least we know that he has a very good chance of getting a Christmas #1 with “When Christmas Comes Around,” his winner’s single written by Ed Sheeran. I was hoping for Saara, as she was a breath of fresh air. Although, even without the win I think she’s likely to have more of a chance of a continuing career, rather than fading into relative obscurity after a year or so (which seems to happen with so many of the ‘talent show’ winners).
But, I was expecting Matt to win…and was fine with it.
