‘Sherlock’ season 4 finale ‘The Final Problem’ to have theatrical release
The fourth season of “Sherlock” really is following suit with “Doctor Who,” “Game of Thrones,” and many other iconic franchises. After all, you’re going to have a chance to see the final episode (fittingly entitled “The Final Problem”) in the cinema.
It was confirmed today that via a partnership with participating theaters in the United Kingdom will allow the episode, which probably will run for long enough to be considered a movie, will air in more than 300 locations around the country as well as Ireland. In a statement, executive producer Sue Vertue had the following to say about the news:
“Fans clearly enjoyed the opportunity of watching The Abominable Bride in cinemas last time so Hartswood Films are thrilled to be working with BBC Worldwide again to do the same for this series four finale.”
For those wondering about specific air dates in America, know that “The Final Problem” will be shown on some select big screens via Fathom Events on January 16 and the 18th, similar to what they are doing stateside with the “Doctor Who” Christmas Special entitled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.”
Personally, we do feel like these specials do very much represent a tremendous opportunity for viewers to celebrate one of the greatest things about “Sherlock” as a franchise: The community aspect of it. One of the reasons why we think the franchise is so successful is because people love to get together, celebrate it, and discuss some of what happens every time we are lucky enough to see it air. There’s something thrilling about getting together to watch an episode, and that makes it more of an event.
Before the ball gets rolling on this, let’s remind everyone that the title of “The Final Problem” is by no means a direct reference to the idea of this being the last episode of the series. There is still tremendous potential for more of the show moving forward, but it could depend on scheduling and story concerns.
