‘Saturday Night Live’ books Kristen Wiig to host, The xx to perform on November 19
For its final show for the month of November, “Saturday Night Live” has decided that home cooking is what they want leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday.
For the second time since departing the series, Kristen Wiig is going to return as the host of the show on November 19. Our initial reaction to this is excitement, mostly because we do think she’s one of the strongest performers to ever come out of being on the show. Yet, at the same time, we admit that many of her defining sketches on the show (Gilly, Target Lady, the Californians) really aren’t our cup of tea since most of them are the same exact thing time and time again. Wiig’s funniest playing unexpected characters and doing completely random things.
Now, let’s not even bring Garth and Kat into this. To us, that was a “Weekend Update” bit that was really funny once, but it completely lost all possible merit in bringing it back since there is zero element of surprise and it continues the same entertainment that you get from people talking over each other at Thanksgiving Dinner.
As for the musical guest, we’re going to have The xx — which is legitimately the name of the band, and not a placeholder that we forgot to fill in. We don’t know a whole lot about them, but to us bringing in bands that we’re not too familiar with is a little bit of an “SNL” sweet spot. We like it when the show uses this in order to introduce us to performers who we may not have been anywhere near as familiar about previously.
