‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’ now official season 6 title

One of the things that has become almost as confusing as the story itself and the air of mystery around it for “American Horror Story” season has been this relatively-simple question: What in the world do we call it?

At first, we wondered if the show was just going to be called “My Roanoke Nightmare” given that this was the card that popped up here and there over the course of the season premiere earlier this week. Then, we started to see a shift online to “American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare,” a name that certainly feels appropriate but is at the same time incredibly long. Can you imagine trying to say that whole title to people over the next several months.

The good news now is that both FX and the collective internet consciousness seem to now have settled on “American Horror Story: Roanoke” as the name for this season, which feels appropriate and isn’t as much of a mouthful. Yet, knowing this idea now makes further sense as to why the network wanted to promote it with such secrecy. Given that things like a hotel or a freak show are so specific in the minds of viewers, they are much easier to identify. Trying to talk around an abstract concept, one built around an infamous colony that disappeared centuries ago, may have been a much harder thing to convince a network to bite on.

Ultimately, this is how we’ve gotten to the point where we are now; the most important thing, though, still remains that this show is high-quality. It could be entitled “American Horror Story: You’re All Idiots,” and we’d still watch if the story was good.
