Should ‘Bachelor in Paradise’ care about rampant engagement spoilers?
Much of the reason to watch a show like “Bachelor in Paradise” is to see the romance, or at least the hope of romance, that comes on the other side. The idea of watching the beginnings of someone’s love story is appealing, even if it comes in the same forum apparently as a show that tries to make a story out of a guy (allegedly) pooping his pants after getting drunk.
Now that we’ve said that, the show is facing another issue now in the social-media age: Spoilers, and just how easy they can get out there. This is a difficult thing to hide during “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette,” but usually the scoop is concentrated to Reality Steve or other sites. Typically, the majority of the contestants are at least wise enough to realize that you can’t post anything to make it obviously what happened at the end of the show. Granted, there was the whole Kaitlyn Bristowe – Snapchat incident, but one of the reasons why it was easier to keep these results under wraps is because you really only have one couple to worry about at the end of the day. Here, you have several, especially given the hint at multiple engagements that was dropped by creator Mike Fleiss before the season.
Unfortunately for the show, the downside of these engagements is coming out now. We’re not going to spoil them here in case some want to be surprised, but over the course of the past few days there have been multiple couples from the show spotted out, effectively confirming that they end up together at the end of the season.
Is this a problem for ABC? You can argue so, since it ruins the element of surprise … but we honestly don’t think that it is as big of one as some may think. There’s a reason why see less furor from the network point of view on spoilers these days, at least publicly. They know it’s an inevitability, and while we think there are some who would rather be unspoiled (hence, not sharing results here), we feel like the main reason people watch is for the drama and the “journey,” to use that cliched phrase. There’s nothing that can spoil that other than watching the show early.
