‘Code Black,’ ‘Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders’ renewed for season 2; ‘The Odd Couple’ gets season 3
Just as it was rumored late last week, CBS has decided to bring back quite a few of their shows firmly on the bubble.
Let’s start with the news that “Code Black” is coming back, since it’s probably the least-surprising news of the bunch. While the medical drama was not a ratings monster by any means, it did a very good job at keeping its ratings steady throughout the first season. Clearly, that was enough to convince the network that the show was worthy of coming back.
Meanwhile, you could argue roughly the same for “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.” This show has now surpassed “Suspect Behavior” as the longest-running spin-off for the flagship show with this renewal. Still, we wondered with the show coming from partly an outside studio if it would get the nod. (Then again, we wondered the same thing with “Code Black.”)
Finally, we are also going to get a third season for the Matthew Perry sitcom “The Odd Couple,” which we never thought was coming in a million years when it was first announced that the show was premiering in late spring. The ratings were above network expectations, which is why we are starting to dub this show the new “Rules of Engagement” or “Mike & Molly” — the sitcom that CBS never shows a whole lot of commitment to in advance, but somehow manages to do good enough to stick around really regardless of where it is placed on the schedule.
For the record, there is still no firm decision on the future of “Limitless,” but we’re definitely worried about it given recent ratings.
