‘The Good Wife’ series finale spoilers: Show co-creator on the plan

The series finale of “The Good Wife” is airing this Sunday on CBS, and with that comes many questions with one of the bigger ones being how is this show is going to end, and if that ending is something that creators Robert and Michelle King have had planned since the beginning or if it developed much later as the series started to take form. It may be somewhat of an under-reported story at the moment, but the Kings were planning to leave the show after this season in the event that it had been renewed. We’re grateful that CBS decided to close up shop instead, given that this is their story, their vision, and we’ve seen what happens when other shows (see “Dexter”) don’t have the ending their original creator intended.

Speaking per The Hollywood Reporter on the subject of if they’ve had an idea of how the show should end from the very beginning, Michelle had the following to say about the ebb and flow of it all:

“We had an image that we knew we wanted to get to. You never know exactly how you’re going to get there in series television because there are a lot of things that step in the way: You lose actors, you gain actors, you get infatuated with a particular storyline, so there’s this meandering path but we had an ending image that we wanted to get and we did.”

There were probably some parts of the journey that could not be predicted years in advance, such as the departure of Josh Charles or Kalinda being written out of the show; yet, the Kings found a way to press onward, and in the end gave us a heck of a compelling story that we will remember for quite some time.
