NBC’s ‘The Voice’ retrospective: Looking at Owen Danoff’s journey
On Tuesday night’s new episode of “The Voice,” we saw Owen Danoff be the latest person eliminated from the competition after he failed to get the #VoiceSave for the second straight week. When you look at his Blind Audition and his journey to the live shows, it felt like he had the potential to be a favorite. He had a popular coach in Adam Levine, a style that tends to do well on this show, and also had the sort of vulnerability that tends to work well.
What happened along the way? That’s something that we do want to do our best to pinpoint in this particular article.
1. Not enough big notes – While we actually prefer smaller, more-intimate performances, this is a show where almost all of the winners can really hit some huge notes. For Owen, he was a little more restrained and quiet. He went for more of a folksy angle.
2. Similar competition – With Nick Hagelin and Daniel Passino in the competition, there was probably too much of this particular archetype for him to stand out. Also, you can say that there are some similarities with Adam Wakefield.
3. Editing – Hey, he didn’t get to perform at the end of the show, which is when performers due tend to get the most recognition.
4. The final performance – It felt as though Owen was shaky at times with the lyrics, and with America voting on it live, that may have gave Daniel Passino the edge. We didn’t necessarily think that his vocal was great, so it was a pretty close battle from our standpoint.
In the end, we’ll miss Owen, mostly because we think there was more to him than we got to see this season.
