‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 8 will be the last, says Ian Somerhalder

tvd -While Kat Graham has already said that the upcoming eighth season of “The Vampire Diaries” may be the last for her as an actress, it is looking more and more like the same may go for the remainder of the cast, as well.

While speaking at Walker Stalker Con this weekend (see the tweet below), original series star Ian Somerhalder made it clear that the cast “decided to do one last season to really do the story justice” … which is definitely a strong insinuation that they’re closing up shop. Note that The CW has not confirmed anything just yet, but if most of the cast is intending to depart after season 8, what’s the point of continuing? We have already lost Nina Dobrev, and we don’t think it could withstand losing some more major members of the cast beyond her.

If season 8 is the last, we do hope that Dobrev turns up for at least one more appearance in order to properly send off the Elena character, even if seems impossible right now mostly because her character is asleep so long as Bonnie is alive. We also hope that many of these people get genuinely happy endings, and not just ones where we can assume they’ll be killed off in a year or two down the line. With that, we’ve got a few things we’d love to see happen:

1. Alaric getting married to someone who not only loves him, but isn’t going to die not long after that.

2. Stefan finding someone to spend his life with, whether it be Caroline or someone else.

3. Damon being at peace, as opposed to being the forever-tormented soul who needs to A) drink or B) kill people.

4. Everyone realizing how awesome Bonnie really is.
