‘Sleepy Hollow’ season 4: Could it happen without Nicole Beharie?

At the moment, the following story is still a little bit tough to swallow, but that does not make it any less true: We’ve reached the end of the road when it comes to Nicole Beharie being a series regular on “Sleepy Hollow.” Abbie Mills died effectively for the sake of allowing everyone else to live, stopping The Hidden One in their tracks.

Given the recent ratings for season 3 of the show (which have not been great), it would be fairly-easy to assume that this could function as a series finale. However, it turns out that there could be further life in the series yet. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there are some active negotiations happening in order to renew the show for another season. There is even a good chance that the show will come back, as Fox still turns a profit with it and they also have a significant hole to deal with in the wake of “American Idol” exiting this year.

In further describing the move that happened tonight, studio 20th Century Fox TV and showrunner Clifton Campbell had the following to say:

“The [season] finale featuring the tragic death of Abbie Mills was a very dramatic ending and a bold move for the show, but Sleepy Hollow has always been known for its shocking finales … We feel we provided a wonderfully poignant conclusion for Abbie and showed some of the best moments between the Witnesses that we’ve seen on-screen. We thank Nicole Beharie for bringing Abbie and Sleepy Hollow to life. We are currently discussing season four, and should the series be picked up for another season, we have some exciting scenarios and new avenues we want to explore.”

Now, we just have to wonder whether or not there should be another season without Beharie in the cast. Would anyone watch? There are certainly many threats of fans not wanting to tune in next season without her, but often threats don’t turn into reality. It’s possible that the show will bring in some other interesting players and shake the series up.

As sad as we may be over the decision, at the same exact time we cannot necessarily say that begrudge Fox over trying to keep a show alive and people employed, especially if it was Beharie who wanted to leave the show. We’ll just have to see what happens.
