‘Quantico’ spoilers: Kelly Rutherford on playing Shelby’s mom

There are many mysteries that are going to be uncovered before “Quantico” ends its first season, and it is with that in mind that Shelby’s family history has been somewhat under-the-radar when you put it in relationship to what is going on with Alex and the terrorist or some of the other stories that are scoring a lot of camera time with the series at the moment.

Yet, some of that will be changing come Sunday night, when Kelly Rutherford reunited with her former “Gossip Girl” boss Josh Safran on his new ABC show. One of the clear questions is how in the world Shelby’s parents could abandon their child and have her believe they were dead, and this is something that Rutherford tees up with the following statement (via TVLine):

“There’s there’s got to be an enormous amount of [discussion about the past], but the point in them doing it was to protect her. They felt that the only way to protect her was to do what they did, in a way, and for her to somewhat have a normal life. It was probably a very difficult choice to make for them. They’ve been keeping up with her, through other people, in terms of being aware of how she’s doing. I can imagine it would not be the easiest choice in the world to make.”

The whole “I made this move to protect you” excuse is something that has been done on about a million or so shows under the sun as of late, so we really do hope that the series does still find a unique / interesting angle to tell it here where there are specific reasons why Shelby would be in danger if she knew the truth. Otherwise, this could all end up being too ambiguous for our liking.
