‘Sherlock’ season 4: Could Andrew Scott return?

If you remember back before “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” aired on the BBC tonight, Andrew Scott did just about everything in his power to deflect the notion that he could be appearing on the show moving forward, insisting that Moriarty was in fact gone despite what we may have seen during the season 3 finale.

Before we continue this article, let it be known that there are some MASSIVE spoilers ahead.

In the closing minutes for the special tonight, Holmes uttered that through his own battles, he had determined that Moriarty was in fact dead. However, at the same time he proclaimed that he knew that his next move could be. The story for the Bride may be his own throughline for determining Moriarty’s machinations, and the character has presented himself in Sherlock’s mind almost as though he is a devil on his shoulder. We hate to make direct comparisons to another show, but after watching “The Leftovers” with Kevin Garvey and Patti Levin, the relationship feels very similar.

What this twist-of-sorts does give to us is evidence that even if Moriarity is gone, there are still ways for Scott to return beyond just in videos. He can haunt Holmes during an investigation, knowing that he is the most feared opponent he has potentially ever faced and potentially will. It creates a further disconnect between Sherlock and the real world, which would make his duties as crime-solver all the more difficult.

Obviously, the bad news is that you’re going to be waiting for quite a long time for more answers. “Sherlock” season 4 has not even started to film.
