Is a ‘Luther’ season 5 possible? Why you should be prepared to wait

Luther

For those of you who have enjoyed “Luther” on either BBC One in the United Kingdom or on BBC America, we hope you are content in the event that this marks the end of the series.

While it has never been officially confirmed that this is the last time Idris Elba will ever play John Luther, it feels more and more like the show’s star and creator Neil Cross are more interested in taking the process to the big screen for a feature film. As for whether or not this will actually happen, that depends on everything from ratings to public interest to whether or not they can convince a studio to buy into a big-budget version of something that people will pay for, given that they were used to getting it previously for the cost of a cable package. That being said though, Idris Elba is such a huge star right now and even though the talks of him playing James Bond have basically been snuffed out, a movie version of “Luther” is the next best thing and could easily attract viewers. You’ll see us in line for that movie if it ever comes out!

As a matter of fact, we feel like season 4 is really a tryout in some ways for what a “Luther” movie could be. It’s more of a challenge to condense the character’s story into just a couple of episodes (or what amounts to be a TV movie in America), and that is something that we feel like Elba and Cross are eager to take on.

If there is another series effort featuring the character, our feeling is that it won’t happen for a while. Much like with “Sherlock” and Benedict Cumberbatch / Martin Freeman, one of the reasons that this is able to live on is simply because of the fact that it goes away for a while, and doesn’t force Elba or anyone else to do a set number of episodes a year. Everyone can go off and do other things for a time and come back to it when the story is right. This is why there is no other show like “Luther” on the air.
