‘The Leftovers’ season 2, episode 8 preview: Justin Theroux teases possible return
The unfortunate thing now about Theroux’s run is that it could be at an end now. At the conclusion of this past episode we saw Kevin die as a result of an attempt to free Patti from his mind. He was meant to be revived by Virgil, who instead opted to shoot himself. It certainly looks bleak, as the end of the episode showed Michael hauling away Kevin’s body.
So why trust Virgil, a man Kevin barely knew, in the first place? As Theroux tells Variety in a new interview, much of it may be due to the fragile state of his mind at present:
“It’s a move of desperation. He wants the cure quickly, whatever that is. He’s not willing to admit he’s his father. He’s not willing to go a psychiatric facility and take medication and nuke himself. It is drastic times for him so drastic measures. Why he has such faith in Virgil, I don’t know. Whether Virgil’s clairvoyant or not, Kevin believes he’s got something from their encounter in the visitors center in the first episode.”
In regards to his character’s future Theroux claims that “it’s possible you’ll see more of me in a couple of iterations,” but he did not say anything else. It would be a bold storytelling move to take away the show’s lead character; we would admire the bravery, but also be somewhat sad because of the brilliance of the role.
