‘Sherlock’ season 4: More on the story for Victorian Special

Before we start to get into the rest of this “Sherlock” article, let’s start with what is a minor pet peeve for us at this point: Why are people still referring to upcoming special as a Christmas Special, when in reality it is airing on New Year’s Day?

Anyhow, let’s go ahead and dive in here to some of what is our primary order of business for this article, and that is listing out the ways that this Victorian Era TV event (which is completely separate from the landmark series, and technically from the upcoming fourth season) is going to be similar and different from the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle source material. Speaking per Digital Spy, executive producer Mark Gatiss makes it clear first and foremost that the show is mostly relying on its own template for what is coming up:

“[It] is mostly an original story, inspired by a reference in one of the [Doyle] stories to one of the ones that Dr Watson never wrote about.”

Meanwhile, fellow show co-creator Steven Moffat added with a message of his own:

“There are loads and loads of details from the original stories, and there is a case referenced in the story about ‘Ricoletti with the club foot and his abominable wife’, so this is broadly speaking, that.”

By the time we make it to the end of this particular story, hopefully we left merely with a feeling of joy and happiness. There’s nothing really else we can expect from a special that is set in a different era; therefore, there are not really any connections that the show can make to the present.
