‘Sherlock’ season 4: New special to air on New Year’s Day in Britain, America

Do you remember how everyone has been feverishly hoping to see the “Sherlock” season 4 special on the same exact day around the world? Well, the good news is that we may now have an opportunity for this to happen.

Today, PBS announced that the special, which is a Victorian take on the story starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, will air on January 1 in both the United States and United Kingdom. This marks the first time that the show has aired on the same day in both countries. As for the title, they’ve also confirmed that: “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride.” Interesting title, no?

We wonder what was the reasoning behind the relatively-simultaneous launch. (It will still air hours earlier in the United Kingdom.) Originally, rumor had it that this special was going to premiere on Christmas Day in Britain, though that had never been confirmed by the BBC. Maybe this is thought of mostly as a way to try to combat piracy, with most viewers deciding to watch the show on PBS in America rather than find some illegal means in order to do so.

While we’re sure some out there certainly would have loved to see the series a little bit earlier than they are going to ultimately, we’re just glad that it does not finally have a premiere date set in stone. We’re going to have a little bit of other news when it comes to season 4 as time passes; the season itself is slated to be filmed this spring.
