Ratings: ‘The Good Wife’ season 7 down; ‘Madam Secretary’ okay; ‘Quantico’ impresses
Welcome to the new normal on Sunday nights, were suddenly getting somewhere close to a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic is suddenly worthy of being considered a smash hit.
Take, for example, “Quantico.” The fact that it held to its entire 1.9 rating that it got last week is a tremendous achievement, and we’re starting to think that come the end of the season, this may be the ABC show we’re thinking of as the biggest smash hit rather than “The Muppets.” It’s not perfect (there is far too much in the romance department for now), but it is doing a lot of things that fit into the ABC mold of what the network does best. Even “Once Upon a Time” (1.8) and “Blood & Oil” (1.2) did a good job of remaining fairly steady. ABC had itself a great night as a whole.
Now, let’s turn over to CBS, who has to feel at least okay about “Madam Secretary” starting with a 1.5 rating. Maybe the press from the Morgan Freeman cameo helped! In any sense, this is the best number of the entire lineup, given that “The Good Wife” (1.2) did not exactly start off strong and “CSI: Cyber” (1.0) already looks more or less dead to rights. That 10:00 p.m. spot for CBS is looking more and more like a funeral dirge with each passing year. It doesn’t really matter just what the network puts there, whether it be “Battle Creek,” “The Mentalist,” or the flagship “CSI”: Nothing seems to work when it comes to consistent viewers.
We will continue to watch some of these numbers as we get a little bit further into the season, but for now we have a feeling that this is going to be a pretty boring night for broadcast viewing figures.)
