‘Call the Midwife’ season 5 spoilers: Show boss on more pleasant story for Helen George’s Trixie
If you “Call the Midwife” with any sort of regularity, then one thing that you are probably fairly well-aware of at this point is that this is not exactly the most pleasant show in the BBC universe. There is death, despair, devastation, and plenty of tears. This is not the sort of show where happy endings are guaranteed; sometimes, they cannot be earned.
So is there really hope for someone like Trixie? She is a young woman (played by Helen George) who we definitely root for, mostly because she is so upbeat for the most part and has a tremendous view on life. However, all of that changed following the end of her engagement, where she started to fall into alcoholism as an escape for many of her problems. Suddenly, the brightest voice on the show because yet another addition to the despair.
The producers were cognizant of this being a story that they needed to tell last season in order to flesh the Trixie character out; however, they have figured out a way in order to have her turn things around in season 5. Speaking per the Radio Times at their recent festival, show creator / writer Heidi Thomas made some of their plans particularly clear:
“She’s found something that makes her feel really, really good … We wanted to see her going to a positive place but also doing something proactive. Also something fun because Trixie is, at the end of the day, a very loveable, very fun character and there are only so many episodes you can pulverise a person for before you want to see them come back and flourish.”
