‘Under the Dome’ canceled by CBS; season 3 to be the last

It looks like we will not see what happens when the residents of Chester’s Mill start to live life without being “Under the Dome” for the first time in seasons. Today, CBS announced that they are ending the series after this season, which to us more or less amounts to a cancellation.

In a statement confirming the news, CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler of course took advantage of the opportunity to praise the show for what it has done:

“Two years ago, Under the Dome broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world … Dome’s event storytelling and multi-platform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of Extant and Zoo. We’re excited to present the final chapter in Chester’s Mill as the story comes full circle, with the Dome coming down as dramatically as it went up.”

With the ratings for “Under the Dome” going down, one of the reasons why there was even some debate over the future of the show had to do with its deal with Amazon, where new episodes aired quickly after they concluded on CBS. This is a similar deal that has worked out for “Extant,” and “Zoo” is doing something similar with Netflix. There are obviously many benefits to this, but at the end of the day not enough to keep the series on the air.

There are still some episodes still to go in this third season, but make no mistake had the ratings been better the show probably would have been renewed for a fourth season.
