Ratings: ‘The Messengers’ series finale on par with previous episodes

For anyone out there hoping that “The Messengers” would end its first season with a little bit of a flourish, the good news is that it did pick up some viewers with its series finale Friday night. The bad news? It still did not deliver much of a punch in the 18-49 demographic.

The supernatural series (not to be confused with the series “Supernatural,” of course) drew a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic last night and 950,000 viewers, numbers that are close to on par with what it drew most of its run. As we said when talking about the show’s undue conclusion yesterday, this is a series that really never had a whole lot of a chance to succeed. It premiered on a Friday night in the spring without really any help, almost as though The CW had made up its mind about it before it had even started. There is a part of us that wishes that they had at least given it a better start time in the summer, or at least paired it with “Beauty and the Beast.”

We thought it would be fun to at least do some cross-comparing between this show and the renewed “Beauty and the Beast,” and what we found was rather interesting: Thursday night’s new episode of the Kristin Kreuk – Jay Ryan series also drew a 0.2 and 950,000 viewers, and it at least had the benefit of a different night. Why is this show coming back while “The Messengers” was canceled weeks ago? It’s largely about international success to us; “Beauty and the Beast” performs well globally, and it also performs well across streaming platforms. This was enough for The CW to give it a fourth season really before season 3 even premiered.

The only thing we can really as for now with “The Messengers” is that hopefully many of its cast and crew do get an opportunity to move on to other exciting things soon enough.
