Should ABC have kept ‘Mistresses’ season 3 after ‘The Bachelorette’?
Earlier this week, there was some relatively sad news breaking for fans of ABC’s “Mistresses,” as it was unveiled that the show had fallen to a new series low 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic. To us, this bums us out on a big level because we feel like this third season has been really fun! Sure, you don’t have Alyssa Milano in the cast, but Jennifer Esposito has shown to be a worthy replacement, and the storylines have been right in the vein of what to expect from the show.
So why the low ratings? There are really three possible explanations that we can think of easily.
1. The Fourth of July holiday – The ratings have been low, but maybe the specifically-poor performance this time around is due to it airing on July 2. Some people out there may have been trying to prepare for the holidays.
2. Milano’s exit – She was the biggest name in the cast, and there may be some who were watching mostly to see what this show would be like with her in a prominent role.
3. The timeslot – This is the one that we feel hurts the show the most. We understand the motivation behind putting “The Whispers” behind “The Bachelorette,” since you already knew how “Mistresses” performed there and you wanted to capitalize on that lead-in. However, “The Whispers” has turned out to be a relative disappointment in the ratings. While we don’t necessarily think that “Mistresses” would fare much better, it could have had a better shot of returning with those numbers.
What do you think: Was ABC better suited to have “Mistresses” in the Monday spot, or are we just making some revisionist history now? This show has had its run. It is nowhere near as fun as it used to be and several of the major character arcs have turned out boring and/or disappointing (Joss + Harry = zzzzzzzzzzzzz, and after ALL THAT). It makes me sad since I really used to look forward to this show, but in all honesty, it has just become a let down. Milano’s exit adds pain on top of it, sure. However, the “fun spirit” and chemistry are just lacking now, or feel forced depending on the characters. THATS the reason my friends and I don’t watch anymore. I’m sure ratings will bounce back up again after the 4th like every other show, but for some of us there’s just no more reason to watch, regardless as to what TV show its after. The Whisperers is pretty good tho.
