‘Outlander’ series author reacts to fans’ massive Emmy campaign
After covering the Emmy Awards extensively over the course of June, we really do not think that there is any way around saying that “Outlander” may have some of the most passionate fans in all of TV. We’ve seen so much evidence of it, from tweets to votes in some of our Emmy polls. They love the show, the source material that it is based on, and they are collectively suffering through another Droughtlander until the second season premieres in 2016. (Trust us, we’re right there with you in the anticipation.)
We have a feeling that Outlander series author Diana Gabaldon was certainly aware of many devoted fans long before now. However, the Emmys are such a notable and prominent event that you can really see the fans in action in a way that you do not often get to otherwise. As Zap2It points out, earlier this month fans managed to get #EmmysforOutlander trending in the United States.
So what does Gabaldon have to say about the runaway success of this campaign? Her comments to the aforementioned website really do speak to everything that has transpired:
“I’m frequently astonished at both the extent and the enthusiasm of the fandom, but certainly very happy that they feel that way … The fans have taken the TV series into their hearts with equal — if not greater! — enthusiasm, and it’s well-deserved. The show is a marvelous adaptation of the book, and every facet of the production, from writing, directing and acting to costume and set design, has been handled with an artistry, excitement and attention to detail that I’ve seldom seen in television.”
We know that there are many categories in which the show will be considered an underdog. “Game of Thrones” is one of the few genre shows that has really broken past the Emmy’s barrier that seems to exist for science fiction or fantasy (at least in the acting and series categories), and there are also occasions where it takes voters a year or two to actually come to terms with present trends. Somehow, the Emmys still do not seem to believe that “Orphan Black” is a thing.
However, we will remain hopeful, and we feel like if nothing else, the Emmy campaign for the show has made it hard for voters to ignore. We’ve been glad to take part in our way; we even spoke with Sam Heughan for an exclusive interview earlier this month. We do feel strongly that the show will receive nominations of some variety; the acting was superb all season, and the same goes for the directing, writing, costuming, music, set design, and a variety of the other technical categories. We just have to wait to see what the Television Academy decides when nominations are revealed come July 16.
Of course, we’ll have further “Outlander” news throughout this Droughtlander, whether we are talking about the Emmys or the content of the show itself. Head over here for more news now!
