‘Downton Abbey’ season 6: Cast, crew to be honored by BAFTA
While “Downton Abbey” has shown itself to be an enormous critical hit in America, for some reason it has not received an equal amount of love in its own country. Surprised? We certainly are. BAFTA has yet to give the overall series an award, but it has been announced that the cast and crew are going to be honored come August 11 in a special that will eventually air on ITV. This is prior to the start of the sixth and final season, which will most likely start up at some point in September.
In a statement confirming the honor, here is what the show’s own executive producer Julian Fellowes had to say:
“I speak for the entire cast and crew when I say how honoured we are that the Academy will recognise the show with this special award.
“Not only is Downton a much-loved show in Britain, it has had huge success in both the US and right around the world, waving the flag for Britain and our creative content and that’s why the Bafta recognition means so much to us all.”
We feel like speaking about the show’s legacy is at the moment very important, since this is something that almost goes hand in hand with the brilliance of the content itself. Before it premiered, we feel like the majority of British imports were more or less an afterthought in America, or were reserved more for niche markets. Some of us knew of the wondrous nature of shows like “Fawlty Towers,” but the majority of people had never even heard of it or any others. “Downton” changed that.
