‘The Mindy Project’ season 4: Mindy Kaling talks introducing new female friend character

It is not particularly often that a show is saved after cancellation, even in this modern TV era when it happens more so than it did maybe a decade or so ago. Still, we do very much feel like “The Mindy Project” should be celebrated for its enormous season 4 renewal on Hulu. This is a second life for the series, and a chance to work with a provider who clearly wants them, and will probably be able to profit with them courtesy of the show’s young, savvy viewers.

Now, thanks to this pickup, we also get a chance to finally start to think more about what could actually be coming up in the near future for the show.

While promoting her upcoming book Why Not Me? at BookCon this weekend, Mindy Kaling said (per The Hollywood Reporter) that female friendship is going to be a part of the new season, and you’ll get to see a new character introduced in part as a result of that:

“It’s hard to make friends as an adult woman. … In L.A., the only people you meet are women in your spin class. And you have to wonder, if a woman seeks you out at spin class, you wonder what the motivations are! But you’re so desperate for friends. … It’s much harder to find someone you want to talk to than a man you want to sleep with.”

We’re already excited to see what Kaling and the writers come up with, but given that the pickup was just announced, it may be some time before further details are released.
