‘Home Fires’ episode 3 review: Weddings in the time of war
What we do like about ITV’s “Home Fires” is that while this is clearly at times a very serious show dealing with such matters as war, they also do not beat you over the head with the themes. Also, they are not afraid to at least give you a little bit of happiness from time to time, which is precisely what we had with Kate and Jack’s wedding.
This was a very happy, simple moment, but one also juxtaposed with some of the other terrible things that are happening at present. For example, did anyone else tear up at the final scene of the episode? There are few things more difficult than watching someone go off to war, but within the world of this series, it is unfortunately very much a reality. It’s another way that the battles have an impact on this town, despite it being fairly isolated from the action.
Right now, Pat is the character we feel the worst for, mostly because of Bob’s actions towards her and the notion that not everyone who suffers abuse is going to have an escape from it. We want to hope for the best for her, but is there any such guarantee that this will come? We do not quite think so.
Unfortunately, we do still think that the series is lacking in some ways. There is not probably enough action to satisfy some; we are not so much talking about explosions or action scenes. We just want to see the pace moving along a little faster. Tonight was heartwarming at times and heartbreaking at others, and we can see some audience members starting to become hooked. Grade: B-.
