ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 6, episode 19 review: ‘The Greater Good’ and the Captain Gates story
Throughout the six-season run of “Castle” on ABC, Captain Gates is a character that has not always received a whole lot of recognition. She is the steely-eyed head of the precinct, but the major of the time, she does not speak much of her past. This changed ever so slightly on “The Greater Good,” which was better than its pretty-terrible / generic name.
The biggest highlight of this hour was getting the chance to meet the Captain’s sister, an equally-impressive woman who also happens to be in a high position of power. The two women were forced to work together in this episode to solve a crime, and this proved itself to be a rather entertaining back-and-forth.
Was the ending here predictable? Certainly, mostly because you knew that the installment was probably going to end with the two being on better terms. It’s the sort of thing that happens here every time we have an episode like this. At least it showed off some of Gates’ tender side in the process, and had at least a little classic “Castle” humor at various moments.
As for the Castle / Beckett wedding story, the endgame here was certainly sweet enough. How many people do you invite to the ceremony? This is a question that so many people do ponder to themselves when going through something like this, and these two characters certainly had to come a decision of their own. In the end, though, they made the choice that rather than bring in a good 400 people that included Wes Craven and Stephen King, there was really one one person that the each wanted to be there: Each other. This wedding story is certainly progressing slowly, but as long as there is payoff, you have to be all right with that. Grade: B-.
