‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11, episode 21 preview: Patrick Dempsey’s Derek stars in ‘How to Save a Life’

The latest -There are a few significant warning signs about next week’s new episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.” First and foremost, we have the title here of “How to Save a Life.” This is a song by The Fray that has basically been used in every hospital drama ever, and it is one of the most well-known songs to be used for any episode so far.

Also, this is the first episode actually written by Shonda Rhimes since “Flight,” the infamous season 8 finale that featured the death of Lexie Grey. She obviously still has a big role in the series, but most of her solo writing credits these days have been on “Scandal.” Before the promo airs tonight, we don’t want to give too much away. What we will say for now is this: This episode revolves around Patrick Dempsey’s character of Derek in a huge way. Could the character actually die? Given that he is under contract for another season, we hope that it is not the end. Instead, we hope that this is just a poignant, powerful story that gives Dempsey a showcase, and it just so happened to be one that Shonda really wanted to write.

Now that we’ve seen the promo, here is what we can tell you now. This episode seems to be about what was going on with Derek involving a car crash at the time Meredith was worrying about him. He is going to try to play the hero, but unfortunately, there is no proof that his sacrifice will lead to anything other than heartache.
