Ratings: ‘Dancing with the Stars’ premiere, ‘Jane the Virgin,’ ‘Castle,’ ‘The Voice’ all decline
The ratings have come in for Monday night, and for the most part, the news is not tremendous. Mostly, it is a fail for “Dancing with the Stars.” While the 2.0 premiere rating in the 18-49 demographic is not necessarily horrible, this is the show’s lowest-rated premiere ever, and it is coming after a season we felt was almost a comeback tour of sorts.
So why is the number down this time? Mostly, we wold attribute it to competition from “The Voice,” it being the spring versus the fall, and mostly there just not being a ton of interest in this cast. We’ve always said that with our job being in TV, we should know at least 90% of the cast when it is revealed for us to not get too negative about it. We had never heard of Riker Lynch or Noah Galloway, and the majority of Americans probably are the same way (even if they like them more now). We hadn’t heard of Willow Shields but that’s more on us for not seeing “The Hunger Games,” and we feel like most Americans had no clue at all who Charlotte McKinney was. We only did because of research for the Super Bowl commercials.
Elsewhere, both “Jane the Virgin” (0.4) and “The Voice” (3.3) each also showed some reasonable declines. While neither has anything to be worried about, we do wonder whether or not NBC is ever going to realize that the battle rounds stink and nobody is really that interested in watching them. “Castle” (1.5) probably has a larger reason to be concerned, given that its lost some viewers this season and the contracts for Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic are expiring.
If there is good news, “The Originals” (0.6) at least recovered from their series low, and “The Following” (1.1) was even with last week … though it is still almost sure to be canceled this season.
