‘Empire’ episode 10 review: Who was shot, and who did Cookie choose?

“Empire” is only a matter of seven days away from its second finale, and tonight the Fox series definitely did everything that it could in order to set itself well for those two big hours.

Tonight, what we had ultimately ended with Cookie making a big choice when it comes to loyalty: She was not going to fall into the same old trap anymore. Rather than going back to Lucious, who acted out towards her after ensuring that Reggie wouldn’t kill Jamal, she opted for a new option: Malcolm. Probably the smart decision on her part, given that we just watched the guy do whatever he could to protect his family … but in a very violent way.

So Lucious manages to save himself (for now), but the majority of his family is not altogether pleased with him. That’s what happens when you secretly try to give them fewer shares in an effort to hold on to your own as long as he can. What makes this man such an interesting character is that he personifies the many who, despite all the signs that his life is going to be short, refuses to acknowledge it and look to the future.

We wish there was more Andre tonight, and that may be our biggest overall critique since the rest of this was paced pretty well, and it made sure to establish just how much the company is currently falling apart on the inside. Trying to hide this while keeping a great front may be the family’s biggest challenge yet. Grade: B+.
