‘Sherlock’ season 4: Benedict Cumberbatch among TV star Oscar nominees

We’re not much of a movie site. Therefore, we’re not going to be spending a whole lot of time today discussing the individual nominees for the Academy Awards.

However, we did think it would be somewhat interesting to highlight the nominees who are still actively involved in TV in some way. If nothing else, this is a great opportunity to actually prove some of those theories wrong about a perpetual elitism existing that keeps the film world from recognizing actors also in television. That mindset died out, for the most part, many years ago. Having a guy like George Clooney out there is a great example of someone who can move on from TV to a great film career.

The most notable TV actor nominated here is Benedict Cumberbatch. He’s been busy filming “Sherlock” this month, but (as expected) also received a nomination for his part in “The Imitation Game.” Here is what he had to say in a statement on the subject:

“I am knocked for six by this. So excited and honoured to receive this recognition. It’s wonderful to be included by the Academy in this exceptional year of performances. To ring my parents who are both actors and tell them that their only son has been nominated for an Oscar is one of the proudest moments of my life.”

As for some other notables, J.K. Simmons (“Growing Up Fisher,” the recently-concluded “The Legend of Korra”) has a Supporting Actor nod for “Whiplash.” Meanwhile, Patricia Arquette of the upcoming “CSI: Cyber” has a Supporting Actress nod for her role in “Boyhood.”

The biggest surprise to many is that former “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston was snubbed for “Cake,” despite many thinking that it was a role destined to get her a nod.
