‘Community’ alum Donald Glover’s rap pilot ‘Atlanta’ ordered by FX
It feels like forever that Donald Glover’s rap-themed project “Atlanta” has been in development over at FX, but we come now bearing good news: The show has finally received a pilot order.
This show is a passion project for the “Community” star, given that he is writing it, as well as starring in it and serving as an executive producer. Before hitting it big as Troy Barnes or getting a rap following as Childish Gambino, Glover was a writer for “30 Rock,” and even made a brief appearance once as a young version of Tracy Jordan.
The story for “Atlanta” revolves around two cousins within Atlanta’s complicated and burgeoning rap scene. Obviously there will be a heavy music component to the show, but we also expect plenty of laughs. If this show can do for hip-hop what “Louie” did for working comedians, we’re going to be thoroughly impressed.
Also, we are still holding out some hope that Glover may someday return for another appearance on “Community,” which is airing its latest season over on Yahoo Screen. Chevy Chase suggested during an AMA on Reddit that he is making a cameo appearance, but a rep for Sony TV said that this has not been confirmed just yet.
If FX executives like what they see, then maybe “Atlanta” finally makes it to television at some point near the end of the year. This is going to be a project that we follow closely largely due to the person at the front of it, so we’re going to have some more news very soon. Stay tuned!
