‘Doctor Who’ season 8, episode 11 review: ‘Dark Water’ brings us more Jenna Coleman (and a Master)

Who is Missy? We’ve wondered this question throughout the week when it comes to Saturday’s new “Doctor Who” episode, and we got some answers by the end … sort of.

There were many theories about her, from a female Time Lord to the Master to Rani or someone completely different. Regardless, she was one of the most dangerous opponents that the Doctor and Clara have come across. She’s a brilliant liar, and in their attempts to extricate Danny Pink from his prison, they found out a tiny taste of it.

Oh, and the Cybermen are also involved, which is never good for anyone. Plus, those who did predict her as the Master were totally right. The closing seconds of this episode were particularly chilling because of it. The notion of her using the afterlife to assemble an army? It’s not good, especially if Danny ends up a part of it.

It’s hard to pinpoint specifics about what we liked the most about this episode, mostly because we loved almost all of it. Jenna Coleman let Clara’s inner darkness out throughout many moments, and it all built wonderfully towards some of the big moments near the end of the episode. You had imagination, serious threats, and a great position that we like to see the Doctor in: As the ultimate underdog. To save humanity, he has his work cut out for him and then some.

Let’s just hope that the final two episodes before the Christmas Special live up to this. Grade: A-.
