‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 and beyond: More concerns over dead characters
Finding out a character is going to die on “Game of Thrones” is inevitable, and basically you should have the same impression going into a season as you do going to a Black Friday sale at an electronics store: Bad stuff is going to go down. You just have to determine in advance just how prepared you really are for it.
Speaking per BuzzFeed while in London, George R.R. Martin said in London that the advantage of The Winds of Winter and the subsequent (and likely final) entry in his A Song of Ice and Fire series is that there is now greater potential for characters to die than ever before. Why? He explains:
“I have a large number of important characters who I switch between to tell the entirety of the story, and that limits who I can kill … The viewpoint characters are meeting up with each other and being in the same point at the same time,” said Martin, “which gives me a lot more flexibility for killing people.”
The crazy thing about Martin is that he’s given himself such a reputation now for killing characters that we have a very hard time imagining that there is anyone he is ultimately afraid of killing. The guy is going to make the choices that he makes, and we have to live with whatever the consequences are.
As for whether or not these deaths will transfer over to the show, it is always a case-by-case basis. However, at the same time we do feel like the show wants to borrow from the books as much as it can when it comes to the big shockers.
