ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 4 spoilers: Will there be any Washington DC scenes?
Given that “Scandal” is a show set all around Washington DC, it is certainly understandable that you would expect there to be some scenes actually filmed in the area. Unfortunately, that rarely is the case. The series actually films in Los Angeles the fast majority of the time, which also makes for a short commute for the cast and allows creator Shonda Rhimes to travel between this and her other shows rather easily.
But will the show head to DC at all this season? Based on what Rhimes told TVLine, it is something she would like to do if financially viable:
“I wish, I hope, I want to … It’s expensive to go there, for any production. But we’d like to. We hope to. We’re trying to save our pennies.”
One of the reasons why Washington is so expensive a place to film is simply because there are so many other priorities. You have to work around government, the crowds, traffic, and so much more. They typically care about other things more than just a TV show. This is why “House of Cards” and “Homeland,” two other shows that have featured Washington and government buildings heavily, are shot in locations like Maryland and North Carolina. (Granted, this season the latter is going to South Africa as the story heads abroad.)
Luckily, the nice thing about “Scandal” is that there are some pretty top-notch visual artists there who can make Hollywood look an awful lot like Washington, minus maybe an outdoor scene here or there.
