Dave Chappelle to David Letterman: I didn’t technically ‘quit’ ‘Chappelle’s Show’
There is a part of us that will forever be fascinated by Dave Chappelle, much in the same way that we are fascinated by Bill Watterson. These are guys who in their respective fields, really could have had almost anything and everything that they wanted. But, each one of them decided that there was something else that mattered to them beyond fame and fortune, and they left at the top of their game.
It’s ironic that the two are in some ways resurfacing at the same time. Watterson resurfaced this past week in order to contribute to some new panels of “Pearls Before Swine” and offer up some commentary on the modern comics page. Meanwhile, Chappelle gave his first interview in a decade on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” What we ultimately had here overall was a very interesting chat, but the only video that is technically out there right now is the one focusing primarily on the end of “Chappelle’s Show.” This is a subject that the comedian has not talked much about since choosing to leave the show and plenty of money at the table, and he doesn’t say too much here, either.
Ultimately, Chappelle really just takes advantage of an opportunity to tell another joke about his exit from the show, and unfortunately at the same time gives you almost no information for sure about why he left. Ultimately, this is just something that we may never quite get a full answer on, just because the comic wants it to be that way.
With that being said, we’re glad that Dave is happy, and that the other Dave in David Letterman is making his own decision to walk away now while he is still very funny and can enjoy his retirement from show business.
