2014 Daytime Emmys will stream live, will not air traditional broadcast
Well, things are getting interesting when it comes to the 2014 Daytime Emmy Awards; ironically, it’s become more like the short-lived “One Life to Live” and “All My Children” revivals.
For the first time, the annual ceremony is going to not air on a major network (it was on HLN the past two years), and is instead going to stream on DaytimeEmmys.com beginning at 5:00 p.m. on June 22. Why do this? Maybe there is just not a whole lot of interest for an awards show about soaps when there are so few left, even if the genre has experienced a gain in viewers over the past year. Either way, we kind of like this in that it allows for a little more of an interactive experience, and many viewers out there don’t really have HLN in the first place.
In a statement, National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Chairman Malachy Wienges said the following about making the move to put the show on at a much different venue than usual:
“We are confident that the expert team we’ve brought on will flawlessly execute an evening that celebrates the outstanding talent being honored and allows fans to be a part of the action.”
The one group of people we feel bad for when it comes to this change are the stars of the shows who probably dreamed of appearing in a Daytime Emmy broadcast at some point in their careers. This is wish fulfillment, and given that only one nominee per category gets a trophy (at least most of the time), the others want to have something else to cling to and take home with them at the end of the day.
