‘Penny Dreadful’: Josh Harnett, Eva Green series renewed by Showtime for season 2
Going into the series premiere from “Penny Dreadful,” we literally had no idea what to expect. We were actually a little disappointed with the premiere numbers, but that was before we found out that the Eva Green – Josh Hartness series was tearing things up with all the other ways in which you can watch.
Basically, this series is drawing 4.8 million viewers across all platforms in America, but interestingly enough, the majority of this is coming after the episodes themselves are. This has become the most-popular new show ever on Showtime Anytime, and this coupled with On-Demand viewing has made it into a sleeper hit.
Thanks to all of this, the show has been renewed officially now for a second season, and network president David Nevins had the following to say on the subject in a statement:
“Picking up PENNY DREADFUL was one of the easiest decisions I’ve made … The series has had worldwide impact, drawing big, passionate audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, and more than any other show on our network has hit the bullseye with viewers who want to watch television in all the new ways that are available. John Logan has deftly created an epic series that has drawn raves from a wide-range of audiences from quality drama lovers to critics, to hardcore genre fans. We look forward to working once again with our partners at Sky Atlantic and are extremely excited for what’s in store for season two.”
We’re thrilled for the renewal, largely since it furthers along genre television in a big way. There is only so much of this out there of a reasonable quality, and with the partnership between Showtime and Sky Atlantic in the UK, the concerns budget-wise are not as substantial as they would otherwise be.
