Chelsea Handler to end ‘Chelsea Lately’ in August
For those of you wondering for sure when Chelsea Handler was going to formally end “Chelsea Lately,” we now have an answer for you … and it may be sooner than you think.
E! confirmed today that the series will come to a close on August 26 with an hour-long live event, which is several months ahead of when Handler’s contract was going to formally expire. Chelsea released a statement on the subject, and while she expressed gratitude for being able to host the show so long, there was also a tinge of humor thrown in here for good measure:
“I myself am more surprised than anyone that I was able to hold down a job for seven years, and it was a fantastic seven years … I will always look back at my time on E! as most people look back at their time in college. I’m glad I went.”
Trying to get inside of Handler’s head to understand the winner workings of this series has always been somewhat difficult. She has seemed for some reason reasonably unhappy with her home the past several months, and maybe that just stems from a desire to do other things after so long. There were rumors at one point tying her to go to CBS to be the new host of “The Late Late Show,” just as there were rumors surrounding her possibly going to Netflix. Neither has turned out to be true.
The biggest thing that we’ll miss about Chelsea is her boldness to go anywhere with her show, and also her presence as one of the few female late-night comics out there. Hopefully E! finds themselves a suitable replacement soon; we would suggest Sarah Silverman, but we feel the odds of that happening are slim.
