NBC’s ‘Hannibal’ season 2, episode 9 review: Even Steven

Hannibal -Last week on “Hannibal,” the show went on a slight diversion from recent installments in order to place the focus somewhere completely different. Luckily, this episode spent a little more time furthering the cat-and-mouse game between Hannibal and Will, and while we still really enjoyed the rhythm of the show, we found ourselves still tonight looking ahead to what we know is eventually coming: The big confrontation between Hannibal and Jack that is going to set the stage for the epic finale.

The main “villain” or at least the new one in this episode was Randall, who had a habit of doing some rather … beastly things. Most of the scenes with him were interesting here, and we actually loved seeing one of the Toronto locations we know rather well in the Royal Ontario Museum used.

But what do we make of Will basically delivering the body of Randall right to him? There are a number of different ways to look at it. It was, as suggested in the episode, “Even Steven” in a ridiculous, twisted way. But, it was also Hannibal getting exactly what he wanted yet again. The purpose of almost this entire story was to further get Will in a position where he is off the rails, since that allows him to have more of the power. You don’t mess with Will’s dogs!

The other major component of this story that we feel will be increasingly important here on out is the presence of Margot and eventually Mason. There’s a wild card if there ever was one, and he could in turn be the man who turns the tide, depending on how the show wants to portray things. Will and company are desperate for a win, and maybe that will be when we have it. As engaged as we were in most of this hour, we don’t actually know how much happened that furthered the actual story along. Grade: B.
